Cloverfield

The film Cloverfield was released on the 1st February 2008, and was directed by Matt Reeves.

This was one of the user's reviews: Tremendous thrills!, 15 January 2008Author:
kanerazor from Yorba Linda, CA. 9/10. Some people have derisively compared this film to The Blair Witch Project because it was all told from the point of view of someone's shaking camera. Unless you have motion sickness, I don't think that's a bad thing. What matters is who's in front of the camera. While The Blair Witch Project featured annoying people screaming at each other, this movie actually made me care about the characters. In fact if it had continued with the romantic drama tone established during the first half hour, I STILL think it would have been worth watching and that's the biggest compliment I can give it.Of course people will be watching this movie for the visceral pleasure and Colverfield delivers. Many thrilling visual and sound effects wowed me (there were a few times I yelled out in shock at a sudden scare). Any horror film will also benefit from a sense of entrapment and this movie pulls off the seemingly impossible feat of making New York City seem claustrophobic because there was seemingly nowhere to hide from the monster.What is the monster? Whatever it is clearly is meant to be an allegory for the carnage 9/11 inflicted on New York, much the same way Godzilla was meant to be an allegory for the damage inflicted on Japan by the atom bomb. There are moments seemingly recreating the documentary footage from 9/11, and they give the film verisimilitude. Touching upon real life horror, plus creating characters that we can relate to and care about, and assaulting our senses with incredible sights and sounds leads to entertainment worth watching many times over. Perhaps the 80 minute run time will bother some people, but on the other hand I think that's better than a film wearing out its welcome. Great job J.J. Abrams and company!

Synopsis
Cloverfield follows five New Yorkers from the perspective of a hand-held video camera. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over. The movie starts as a monster of unknown origin destroys a building. As they go to investigate, parts of the building and the head of the Statue of Liberty come raining down. The movie follows their adventure trying to escape and save a friend, a love interest of the main character.

A2 Coursework and skills

On the whole i think my coursework went very well, the pre-production was the one i seemed to struggle with a little more as i didnt realli have the use of programming to help me but when it came round to the production piece i had the help of the programs for the usage :)

A2 Coursework

My media exam went ok, the T.V drama representation question was my stronger side of the course and was happy to see the question being related to gender. The Music Industry side was a little harder as the case study I created dint really have much about te qauetion on new media technology so I had to think of other related products to get me through it but hopefully it went quite.

7. Looking back at the preliminary task, what do i feel i learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that it is important to get the time management right because you need a good organisation of when you are to do something so its easier to get things done. Also another main importance is the creativity as you need to be able to think about how to set out the different pieces of construction and where to position everything along with what the content will include.
6. What have i learnt from the technology used and the process of the product?
I have learnt that using programs like fireworks and paintshop pro, you can manipulate photos to make them look;
brighter
clearer
sharper
or maybe to add or take out things you dont want the audience to see.

A positive that came out of my work was that i enjoyed playing with the front covers and making others out of them but the thing i found difficult was getting the picture to be the right size, shape and angle.
5. How did i attract the audience?
I attracted my audience by giving them what they wanted. I handed questionnaires around to people in my school and some to others in the town centre to fill out to give me some idea of how to construct my piece and whom to aim it at. that is why my genre of magazine is pop and mainly teenagers would buy it.

4. Who would be the audience for the media product? Why?

these would be the target for the product as pop music fans would see this as an oportunity to buy something they like along with young teenagers. adults may buy it to see what they think of it others may buy it because they like the look of it.
3. What media institution might distribute my media product?

here is a list of them;

  • BBC
  • virgin media
  • Music channels on television

These may want to distribute my product because it may be a plee to be able to promote themselves or they can see lots of money being made of my product.

2. How does the media product represent particular social groups?

My Front cover has a photograph of a young singer with the background of a wall. the connotations of this are low in social class and generally less educated. The clothing that is presented shows to the audience that maybe after becoming famous he 'done' himself up and made himself look a better person to the audience.

This is the first answer of my evaluation.

Four weeks into the G321 coursework and i have decided to think about analysing my questionnaire results which i gathered from asking local people around the town centre. i am currently thinking about how to construct the tables and charts of results ready for the next deadline. I think i have a good range of results looking at the feedback from the public and I'm enjoying the way i can express my work interactively.

The purpose of a blog is to post up work so we can go back and add things to it and its in a safer place than if it were in a floder because with a blog it cannot be lost but with a folder it can so its a very good bit of equipment
